Drink Driving and The Police

The police are allowed to stop any vehicle at their discretion, and will often set up Drink Driving checkpoints. The Police may carry out a breathalyser test if you have:

Drink Drinking Limits

The alcohol limit for drivers in the UK is:

  • 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath
  • 80mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood
  • 107mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine

Drink Driving Penalties

In order to achieve a conviction for Drink Driving, the court has to be satisfied that all procedures have been followed correctly.

  • Banned from the road for at least 12 months
  • Fined up to £5,000
  • Possible prison sentence, of up to six months.
  • If caught more than once in a 10-year period, you may receive a three-year ban.
